Unter Cobalt-Isotope werden alle Atomkerne des chemischen Elements Cobalt zusammengefasst; diese bestehen allesamt aus einem Atomkern mit 27 Protonen und im ungeladenen Zustand aus 27 Elektronen. Der Unterschied zwischen den einzelnen Cobalt-Isotopen beruht auf der Anzahl der Neutronen im Kern. Häufig findet sich auch die Schreibweise Kobalt.
Natürlich auftretende Cobalt-Isotope
Das Element Cobalt tritt in der Natur nur in Form eines einzigen, stabilen Isotops mit der Standardatommasse 58,933195(5) u auf: Co-59.
Alle anderen Cobaltisotope sind instabile Radionuklide. Einige dieser Radioisotope finden Anwendung in Medizin, Industrie, Forschung sowie zur Lebensmittelbestrahlung.
Cobalt-60
Kobalt-60 ist mit einer Halbwertszeit von 5,3 Jahren das langlebigste radioaktive Cobaltisotop und wird künstlich durch Neutronenaktivierung (z. B. mit 252Cf oder im Neutronenfluss von Kernreaktoren) aus dem natürlichen Cobalt-59 erzeugt. Co-60 findet eine breite Anwendung in Medizin und Industrie.
Die so genannte Cobaltkanone oder Cobaltbombe ist ein Bestrahlungsgerät zur Strahlentherapie von Krebserkrankungen und verwendet Co-60 als Gammastrahlungsquelle. Andere Anwendungsbereiche sind die Konservierung bzw. Sterilisierung von Lebensmitteln (kalte Pasteurisierung) und medizinischen Produkten, die zerstörungsfreie Durchstrahlungsprüfung bei Materialuntersuchungen, Dichteprüfungen u. a.
