Unter Promethium-Isotope werden alle Atomkerne des chemischen Elements Promethium zusammengefasst; diese bestehen allesamt aus einem Atomkern mit 61 Protonen und im ungeladenen Zustand aus 61 Elektronen. Der Unterschied zwischen den einzelnen Promethium-Isotopen beruht auf der Anzahl der Neutronen im Kern.
Promethium ist ein chemisches Element aus der Gruppe der Seltenerdmetalle (Seltene Erden) und der Lanthanoide. Neben dem Technetium ist das Promethium eines der beiden chemischen Elemente mit einer Ordnungszahl kleiner als 83, die keine stabilen Nuklide besitzen.
Promethium-Vorkommen in der Natur sind nicht nennenswert (weniger als 1 Kilogramm in der gesamten Erdkruste), weil zwar Promethiumisotope bei radioaktiven Zerfallsprozessen (U, Eu) anderer Elemente und äußerst geringen Mengen als Zwischenprodukte auftreten (z. B. in der Pechblende), diese aber auf Grund der kurzen Halbwertszeiten der Promethiumsnuklide von knapp 18 Jahren (Pm-145) und weit darunter sehr schnell weiter zerfallen.
Eine geringe technische Bedeutung als β-Strahlenquelle besitzt das Nuklid Promethium-147, da es als Spaltprodukt in Kernreaktoren durch beta-Zerfall aus Neodym-147 entsteht und daraus in gewissen Mengen gewonnen werden kann.
