Unter Yttrium-Isotope werden alle Atomkerne des chemischen Elements Yttrium zusammengefasst; diese bestehen allesamt aus einem Atomkern mit 39 Protonen und im ungeladenen Zustand aus 39 Elektronen. Der Unterschied zwischen den einzelnen Yttrium-Isotopen beruht auf der Anzahl der Neutronen im Kern.
Natürlich auftretende Yttrium-Isotope
Das zu den Seltenerdmetallen zählende chemische Element Yttrium tritt in der Natur nur in Form des stabilen Nuklids Yttrium-89 auf. Alle anderen Isotope sind instabil und zerfallen mit Halbwertszeiten von wenigen Tagen und weit darunter unter Emission radioaktiver Strahlung. Einige andere kurzlebige Yttrium-Isotope entstehen bei der Uranspaltung zum Beispiel in Kernkraftwerken oder bei nuklearen Explosionen.
Das Yttrium-Isotop Y-90 findet als Radiotherapeutikum Anwendung in enzündungshemmenden Mitteln: ATC-Code V10AA01 (90Yttriumcitrat-Kolloid), V10AA02 (90Yttrium-Eisen(III)hydroxid-Kolloid) und V10AA03 (90Yttriumsilicat-Kolloid). Die Erzeugung des Yttrium-90 kann durch Neutronenbestrahlung von Yttrium-89 oder von Strontium-90 erfolgen.
